That Man, The Filthy One ©
By: April R. Pierce
He walks in with a dollar and a dime
You look and see a filthy man
The stereotypical middle aged,
Seemingly drug addicted, homeless man
He asks for a nickel and no one sees
Some look but pretend they didn't
Others grimace and walk away
You look at him in disgust
Warning your kids to stay away
Not giving a second to think
He is loved by someone
Wherever he is
Under the bridge
At that shelter
Never seen again
People go looking
But to no avail
Bystanders say they've seen him
Only he is nowhere to be found
The people walk by
Not noticing
The pain and scars
The lost hope
The defeat
People walk by
Not knowing he is
A Father
A Son
A Brother
A human they are dehumanizing
That man,
The filthy one
The guy who asks for a nickel
The one I miss
Is loved
Wherever he is

That little nose, spotted and unique
His feet betray him,
Crashing to the floor an inch below him
Frightened he appears
Panicked he cries for mom
Meow, meow, meow!
High pitched and squeaky
He hasn't found his voice
Mama comes to the rescue
Sauntering into the adjoining room
Carefully she clutches him in her mouth
Safe in his home is where he sleeps
The moment I saw him I knew he would be mine
I will show him a loving home
A safe home
A forever home
Something I have never known
Forever my buddy
The lover of my soul
The love of my life
My main man, my lovely cat

Comforting and loving
Always by my side
While I grieved and cried,
The loss of my dear sister
We whimpered and hid together
All those violent nights
He held my hands while I held his paws
That day I came home from school
He was nowhere to be seen
Mom had sold him
Never had I felt betrayal so deep
My soul was broken
Crushed by own mother
Willing to allow her daughter to grieve once again
Just for a high
I loved him so
A piece of my heart was stolen,
That day I came home
That day my dog was gone
Never seeing him again
Never saying good-bye
I'll never forget you B.J.
Forever in my heart
